Project Details
Methods
The methods we used to collect and process the data to produce the maps are detailed in this manuscript. You may cite this project as Marvin, DC., Bradley, BA, & Wilcove, DS. 2008. Web-based regional mapping of plant invasion based on expert opinion. http://invasive.princeton.edu.
Goals
We have created high-resolution maps of the distribution and abundance of Chinese/European privet (Ligustrum sinense/vulagare), kudzu (Pueraria montana), and cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica) across the Southeast United States. Using these maps, Southeast weed managers will be able to determine hot spots of invasion, coordinate management across the region, and attract funding to eradicate or contain these species and mitigate the impacts in areas of widespread infestation.
How is this different from EDDMaps?
The SE-EPPC is conducting a mapping project across the Southeast as well (called EDDMaps). While we are collaborating and sharing data between our projects, we differ in two distinct ways. First, SE-EPPC is mapping point locations of invasion as well as county presence. In order to create high-resolution regional maps for these species, we map at a resolution in between the county and point infestation scale. This will allow the creation of the first truly regional picture of invasive weeds.
Second, SE-EPPC's mapping project is ongoing and will serve as the region's center for invasive mapping as time goes on. We are conducting this project on a finite timetable and plan to adapt this model to other invasive species and regions. Our project serves to compliment the work of SE-EPPC, rather than impede or duplicate.
How you can help
We need your knowledge of the local abundance of our target species: kudzu, cogongrass, and privet (Chinese/European). By participating in our online mapping program, you can help build these important maps. All you need to do is:
- Locate the area of the Southeast United States you are familiar with.
- Estimate the total abundance of each target species for each quarterquad.
- Enter that information in each quarterquad on the map.
What is a quarterquad?
If you are only familiar with a small area (maybe 3-4 quarterquads on our grid) we still want your input! Every piece of knowledge will go a long way toward building an accurate picture of these invasive species across the Southeast.
